Why am I called short even after getting to average height?

I mostly fraud around 3 inches to go to 5'10, which is spot on the average height in our school. But yesterday an mf saw me walking with my gf whose way shorter and told her that "I looked shorter than her" jokingly and i sometimes do get called short by people who have known me.

Did people just not notice I'm taller? Is it because I'm skinny?
