Why are alts prohibited?

No one has ever explained this to me. What harm is there in having multiple accounts?

Honestly, I have no idea. I have been part of forums where having an alt was never looked down upon. It does create some paranoia as people don’t really believe there’s any new users, perhaps that’s why? I’m not sure. I do know I wouldn’t have made it a rule if this was actually my own forum. So don’t take my answer for the official .org policy answer.
