Yes I admit that American doctors and surgeons are some of the best in the world and that American hospital have absolute top tier medical infrastructure and facilities but why TF do surgeons charge so much for simple surgeries. Something as simple as rhinoplasty costs 2 bands and more significant bone cutting surgeries are well in the range rover territory. Jfl. I guess they always carry the frustration of med school with them and do their best to recover the mountains of debt they acquired on the way.

You can even get a basic liposuction or fat transfer for the hollow undereye area for under 1000€ at a good reputable clinic here.

I've heard of internationally lesser known surgeons who do basic chin or jaw implants for a 3000-4000€ too.

2k for a rhinoplasty sounds cheap af

Surgeons (and surgery in general) are expensive for a mix of reasons that come down to training, skill, risk, and system costs:

1. Extensive Training and Scarcity

  • Surgeons go through 10–15+ years of training (college, medical school, residency, sometimes fellowship).
  • That time investment plus the stress and long hours means fewer people enter and stay in the field, making their labor scarce and valuable.

2. High Skill and Responsibility

  • Surgery involves high-stakes, precision workβ€”mistakes can be life-threatening.
  • Surgeons carry immense responsibility, which commands higher pay compared to other specialties.

3. Malpractice Insurance

  • Surgeons, especially in high-risk specialties, pay very high malpractice insurance premiums (sometimes tens of thousands per year) to protect against lawsuits. That cost gets built into what they charge.

4. Hospital and Equipment Costs

  • Surgery requires a full team (anesthesiologists, nurses, techs), operating rooms, sterile equipment, and advanced machines.
  • Hospitals charge very high fees to cover overhead, maintenance, and administrative costs. Even if the surgeon’s cut isn’t huge, the total bill skyrockets.

5. Billing and Insurance Systems

  • In the U.S. especially, pricing is affected by insurance negotiations and hospital markups. Hospitals inflate prices knowing insurers will negotiate them down, but uninsured patients may see the β€œlist price,” which looks astronomical.

6. Opportunity Cost and Lifestyle

  • Surgeons work long, irregular hours with high stress, and often sacrifice personal time.
  • Higher pay compensates for the burnout risk and the fact that their skills can’t be easily replaced.

πŸ‘‰ So, it’s not just β€œthe surgeon’s salary” but the entire system (training pipeline, liability, hospital costs, insurance practices, and risk profile) that makes surgery expensive.

Would you like me to break down how much of a surgery bill actually goes to the surgeon vs. hospital and other costs?
