why are americans/canadians so different yet ozzies and kiwis are just brits abroad?

Just look at any historical depictions of British accents during 1700s. Americans and Canadians aren't really that much different than Brits tbh.

Because of earlier settlements/colonization in the Americas. To put things into perspective, Harvard University was founded in Massachusetts 152 years before the first settlements and penal colonies started arriving in Australia.

USA has a culture of people who left Europe specifically because they wanted to be separate from Europe's whims and rules almost 200 years before civilization even began in Australia.

We've got more variety of immigrants too. Not just English, but lots of Dutch and others been coming to USA since early 1600's.

Then you could go on about the civil war, our relationship with the native population and slavery. There's a lot of things that make us very separated from Great Britain for much longer compared to AU and NZ.
