Because both German and English derive from the same Germanic language family. About 40% of German vocabulary is very similar to English and both languages have similar pronunciations and grammar rules. I personally even noticed these similarities firsthand when I tried to learn German on Duolingo, and I'm not even a native English speaker, I'm a B2 speaker.

Like for example the English word "milk" translates to "milch" in German, the word "brother" translates to "bruder", the word "apple" translates to "apfel", etc. This shows you how similar these two language really are.

Thats interesting, I’ve also noticed this with French to English, but English deriving itself from other languages is expected because it’s the more recent out of most other languages
