Why are males that are virgins past a certain age made fun of way more than females?

If a mid to late 20's male says he's a virgin, people will mostly make fun of him and think of him as a weird freak. But if a female who's the same age and is also a virgin people tend to be more "supportive" and not think of it as weird. What strikes me as odd about this is that getting laid is way harder for men than it is for women and yet virgin men get ridiculed to a much higher degree.
