the northern nomadic peoples and northern Han Chinese who built the Huanghe and Liao River civilizations are genetically the largest and most physically imposing populations in the world. Europeans have only grown taller over the past 150 years, and before the 19th century, people in northern China were the tallest population. Once China’s development is complete, their genetic potential for height will far surpass that of Europeans.
Southeast Asians and southern Chinese (such as those from Hong Kong and Guangdong) currently living in the West are not the “true” East Asians. They are a mix of Australoid and Negrito, but Westerners mistakenly consider them Asians. True East Asians exist in northern China around the Yellow River, Mongolia, Manchuria, and North Korea, while South Korea has a slight East Asian admixture, which is why they are taller and bigger than the Japanese.
Westerners do not know China. They see Austronesians in Southeast Asia, Guangdong, and Hong Kong and think they are Chinese, but they have never seen the true East Asians of northern China.
Northeast Asians are the most physically superior population in the world, and this can also be seen in historical European records.
William Woodville Rockhill, 1891
"The people of Shantung and Chihli are a magnificent race. In stature and muscular development, they are not only superior to any other Asiatic people but may be favorably compared with the best specimens of the Northern European races, often surpassing the average German or Scandinavian in height and breadth of shoulder."
Arthur Henderson Smith, 1894
"It is a common observation that the Northern Chinese... possess a physical constitution which is in many respects superior to that of the white man. Their power of endurance under conditions that would kill a European is well-known... They are giants compared to the Southern Chinese, and even among a crowd of tall English guardsmen, a Shantung man would not seem out of place."
Sir Alexander Hosie, 1890s
"The Shantungese is a splendid type of humanity... physically superior to many of the Latin races of Southern Europe and rivaling the tallest of the Anglo-Saxons. Their heavy frames and powerful limbs give an impression of immense strength that one rarely sees combined with such height in the West."
William Gill, 1880
"I have seen men in the northern provinces who would be the envy of any Grenadier regiment in Europe. Their height is often over six feet, and they are built in proportion. They represent a type of physical manhood that is perhaps unsurpassed by any other race in the world."
George Staunton, 1793
"The men are in general well-made, and of a height above the average of Europeans“
Sir Alexander Hosie, 1890
"The men of North China, especially in Shantung and Chihli, are a fine, tall, and well-built race, very different from the smaller and more slender people of the Southern coast. It is not uncommon to find individuals among them of a stature that would be considered remarkable even in England.“
Alexander Hosie Forbes, 19th
"The inhabitants of North China, especially those of Shantung and Chihli, are a fine, tall, and well-built race, very different from the smaller and more slender people of the Southern coast. It is not uncommon to find individuals among them of a stature that would be considered remarkable even in England."
Isabella Bird Bishop, 1890
"The Northern Chinese is a different being altogether from the Cantonese... He is a tall, well-formed, and often a handsome man, with a skin not much darker than that of a southern European. Their physical endurance is marvelous."
In China, the government conducts the CNSSCH every five years. This survey is the most authoritative in terms of sample size and reliability, as it is based on actual measurements of hundreds of thousands of students.
Below are the regional average heights of 19-year-olds in China for 2019–2020 released by the CNSSCH (please note that those who were 20 years old in 2019–2020 were born at a time when GDP per capita was at a level similar to that of Africa).
