Mostly because he doesn’t acknowledge that she’s clearly doing shit against her will - he knows it (for example when she calls herself freaky Nikki even tho she hates being called that), bear doesn’t seem to care and persists in what he is doing.

That being said, that’s why the film is so excellent - you struggle to understand who is actually the antagonist and who is the protagonist.

He refused to tell his friends - also, he may be slow but he should’ve gotten the earlier hints (she’d faze in and out of consciousness, the cat sandwich, sm other bs).
