Yeah, but some cars may have more space, can be bigger than others (which increases comfort), and be faster than others, and these are important things (not to mention other premium details and features that are designed to increase comfort even more)

You can have the same discussion about the size of a house, a yard, the location of them, a phone, etc. (like you can have the minimum of everything and use it strictly for functionality)

For all of the above it's strictly about control, safety and comfort (and not necessarily as much as your own, like you being single, you can live in a rented apartment, and you can always take the uber), but when you want to have a girlfriend/wife, you want to have kids etc. the paradigm totally changes (you need a bigger house with more rooms, a bigger yard, a bigger and faster car, etc.)

The ''so into cars'' thing comes from 2 very important aspects:

1. When it comes to a house, you either inherit it, or you buy it once, or let's say twice maximum in your lifetime, like you don't tend to change it every few years. A phone isn't so expensive that you can't afford to change it every 3-5 years, and if you have an above average salary, there's not much else to do with the money other than.. buy car / cars / change your current car.. (so that people will automatically be more interested in what to buy related to them)

2. The car is the first thing that reflects / shows to the rest of the population / society your status / value as an individual to our species

This tends to be important because it tends to attract people to you, and that can also come with networking opportunities/growth (when you have a special car that stands out, this information reaches your entire extended family/neighborhood/community, even the whole city, and your name and profession becomes much more known to everyone)

Not to mention the most obvious aspect, which is that it attracts pussy like crazy (I could write a whole book on the reasons why this happens)
