Why are there so many couples where the woman looks so much younger than the man

I was at the fair today, so lots of couples . Several times i saw couples where the woman appeared 5 years younger than the man.
Have I been retarded for worrying about looking old if it actually attracts girls my age? (17) I've been keeping my facial hair a little shorter than is optimal because I naturally look older and I don't want to seem 30.
