Why are white Europeans taller than white Americans?

White Europeans are 1-2 inches taller than white Americans (excluding Southern Europe). I remember being surprised at how much taller the non ethnic whites were in France compared to America. Why is this?

Yes. Almost all the early white settlers were from England or Scotland (Scots-Irish or Ulster-Scots as they’re called in the UK). There was a sizable German Quaker population in Pennsylvania early on, but their numbers were nowhere close to the English.

Starting about 1840, the Irish began pouring in by the millions because of the potato famine. Today there are more Irish in America than in Ireland.

Around the same time a lot of Germans began coming in and settling the Midwest farming belt. (It is said that more German immigrants came in than Irish and English). They became the dominant ethnic group, especially in the Midwest. However, you’d never know it because many of them changed their surnames to Anglo sounding ones. The Swedes began coming in around this time and settled the upper Midwest, close to the German territory.

It wasn’t until the late 1800’s and early 1900’s that groups like the Poles, Hungarians and Czechs began coming in. Jews began coming in from those same regions as well.

Today, I would say white Americans who have been here for more than a few generations are overwhelmingly derived from the UK. And there’s a decent chance lots of the Germans and Eastern Euro’s have some British-American admixture."

Probably because europeans in europe are almost exclusively european ancestry while white americans have other ethnic groups in them such as latin americans, african americans, native americans, etc. all of which groups are shorter than europeans on average.

Yea I'm 5ft 11 ( 180cm) and went their for a few days during vacation to Croatia, and can confirm no cap average German is 6ft 1( 185cm) Tons of height moggers their. They also were pretty facially good looking. Netherlands is probably also 6ft 1 (185 cm ) for the average white man their.

Remember that ethnics pull down the height average. They say online average american man is 5ft 9 ( 175cm), but average white is like 5ft 10 , or 178cm.

They are not really that much taller,only the tallest euros are but the tallest areas have smaller population.
