Calories are a measurement of a specific form of energy. Explicitly defined , explicitly measured as such.
There is a mathematical way convert energy into another form of energy but there is needed some kit or machinery in the world to be transformed
And the body doesn't have that
The physical thing that causes something to express heat is the energetic state of electrons , the valence.
The energy transfer between electrons or a food substances in a bath of water , is achieved via photons. Which are electromagnetic waves in the photon field which are at certain wavelengths we experience heat. Explicitly defined as such. We cant use it for a metabolic process. There is no equivalent between calories and actual physical work being undertaken by the human body.
We are often told that calorie in , calorie out is a good tool(not true) to predict what will happen to our weight over time if we control it. Youre not actually controlling your calorie intake if you do , you control the amount of food you eat/mass you are putting into your body. The only thing that affects your weight is the balance between mass and mass out , a case limiting example of energy in and energy out.
No amount of absorbing photons and taking out photons will change your mass.
Why not ?
Because photons don't have any mass that cant be brought to rest. You cannot change your weight by retaining photons it is mass retained that changes your weight
Calories arent appropriate measurement to calculate a bowl of food. It wont work effectively at losing weight for example unless you vastly under eat in order to "swamp in "signal to noise ratio"(noise in this context means something missing).
When you do exercise you use ATP , not calories
So its better to use a mass model to see how much you eat
In conclusion calories are complete nonsense to the human body
