usa is the largest producer of oil or at least was at one point. A lot of untapped wells

It's cheaper and more efficient to get certain goods from country that specializes in those specific goods. If everything were to be made in the US, it lose space for manufacturing goods it is good at. It would make stuff more expensive as well

While the US has a population of 300 million, it doesn't always mean that it will be more efficient. The cost of labour in the US is higher compared to other countries.

To reiterate what I said previously better, some countries are better are making certain things. The US is part of the globalized economy as well, that would mean they rely on countries to make things they need. If the US were to become self sufficient, they would have to make everything on their own. That would be hard and inefficient. As well as goods have different demands, some have little demand so it wouldn't make sense to make a factory for certain goods like it.
