His mental health was declining. He felt he failed as an artist, even though his work was starting to get recognised at the time

He was a lost soul, misunderstood and tormented. He didn’t know who he was anymore. He felt his loneliness reverberate off the walls of his own emptiness.

He was never recognised and died poor while being supported by his brother his whole life, someone he frequently had arguments with.

He tried to fit in as a humble village painter at first, but they didn’t accept him cause his family paid for everything. Then he tried to make his mark in the bourgeoisie french art scene, but they didn’t like his bold lines and abstract art (the fashionable art at the time were life-accurate portraits)

Basically everywhere he went, he was unrecognised and didn’t fit in. His oneitis rejected him too. On top of all that he was mentally ill and he kept falling out with his friends. He was ahead of his time in art, but no one recognised it. So yeah, he had nothing.

There are suspicions that he could have suicided since he also felt like a burden to his brother. Since his brother was supporting him financially, but he was starting a family also at the time

There is a thin line between being an artist and being "mentally ill".
