I don't know about that. But here's what I found concerning flips.

From 1565–1898 intermarriage between Spanish and Filipinos was legal and socially practiced.

So that explains it. Intermarriage was only legal in Vietnam in certain far flung provinces during certain times during colonial rule. It was not socially acceptable though.

They've avoided the sun for thousands of years in the Orient. Light skin traditionally means wealth. Means you can afford to be indoors and don't have to be out in the paddies all day. It's not because they want to identify with Caucasians.

Go to south east Asia now and you'll notice a lot of men grow their thumbnails very long. Its the same thing. They want to show they don't need to do any manual labor.
