some quick thoughts:
arctic evolution, then north china plain one state, then later rice culture

maybe the neanderthal and denisovan genes too

growing rice seems to require more collectivism. the northern chinese and northern koreans are more individualistic than their southern rice cultivating brethren

furthermore, once multiple harvest rice became available during song dynasty, population exploded

as with the baby boomers, less quality control, and with a (theoretically) all powerful government, not the same selection pressures as elsewhere

then, famines rekt civilization. china was once admired for its good government by arabs and persians

if you look at chinese characteristics before and after song dynasty, they are markedly different, even though song was the first to really implement the enlightened testing system, and even though there were some nerdy/civilized characteristics already remarked upon in ancient times:

1. han dynasty chinese were already said to be "mild frugal and just"
2. after the uprising of the five barbarians they could claim that han chinese were less ferocious and violent, even though the han had dominated them for 400 years by that time,
3. and the founder of the mighty tang dynasty could claim that "China loves righteousness"

of course, there's a big clue right there, could we say these days that chinese are just, and that they love righteousness

perhaps this was against the context of blood thirsty barbarians. but china really did have an amazing government before the turn of the first millennium, and a philosophy about governing culture
