Why do ethnic families like to drive off the beaten path?

ISTG my family like to visit odd areas/neighbourhoods of towns, cities, and random villages, just like we did on our last holiday to Korea (we took several rail trips to random towns but retreated back to the hotel we stayed in after each day).
