What women refer to as "chivalry" was actually just an unspoken agreement between men and other men. Random women barely factored into it. The vast majority of men were indirectly in on the agreement whether they realized it or not. It was self-interest at play.
Chivalry was a code of conduct that mainly revolved around treating your inferiors with kindness. Not "inferior" in the derogatory sense either, but the natural assumption was that capable adult men were physically, intellectually and morally superior than other members of society (or should be). If you throw it that assumption then the chivalrous code of conduct goes with it.
