Why do girls only talk to me when I'm out with a friend?

My friend isn't chad he's about my range but shorter. Or when I'm with other guys walking around. I've had girls talk to me directly but its never when I'm alone at the gym or alone at a store.

Do people just assume you are weird if you are alone some place or what?

I've had this happen with my chad friend in college it was brutal 3 girls approached us in one night.

But that's not always the case because the girls I'm talking about here were mainly talking to me and not my other friend. Or it was even 20/20
