cognition is only supposed to guide a human towards survival and reproduction, how can the human brain so commonly drive someone to do the complete polar opposite, its so unnatural and corrupted ngl. This is what happens when an intelligent organisms are separated from their natural environment, same thing happens to orcas in captivity for example, unlike in the wild they can act aggressively and even kill humans acts completely divorced from their natural behaviour in the wild. I've learned that the core reason why you have a body or a brain in the first place is because your genes need a vessel to ultimately multiply itself as a new organism. That's why you protect your children from danger, your genes just see the protection as one of its old vessels protecting a new vessel.

So if your brain is convinced that it's a burden on your tribe which shares similar genes to you (because you're chopped or weak or whatever), it might be better off yourself. It's the same mechanism as with protecting your kids, it's a strategy the gene pool uses to kill off a broken part of itself which is holding back the more promising vessels.

Good point, I think it's because the brain THINKS it's a useless person, or that people are better off without them. A lot of people who kill themselves say that, don't they? "Oh I'm such a burden, people don't want me around, yadda yadda..." so even when your genes almost definitely would be better off with you being alive, the brain has become irrational and doesn't see it that way.

It might be why humans are disproportionately likely to commit suicide compared to animals. All organisms might have this "suicide reflex" to protect the gene pool, but only humans have a powerful frontal lobe that can rationalize elaborate arguments as to why it's time to send a signal to the suicide reflex.
