I can't talk for you, but for me, current and past addictions all stem from being constantly overwhelmed, chronic stress and dissatisfaction with life. It's a form of escapism and self-medication. I likely also have undiagnosed ADHD.

If you told me 10 years ago, I'd start smoking or become an alcoholic, I would've laughed at you. Barely touched any substances in my teens. I'm the only one in my family besides my paternal aunt who smokes. Addiction can hit anyone. I'm glad I kicked the alcohol though. Godspeed to you!
