It's because of the spices, the smell really gets in your clothes. If I'm not careful enough then the same happens to me, that's why I always get told to leave the kitchen if I'm wearing clothes that are meant for outside. I guess you have to be aware about the fact that it gets into your clothes and that it makes it smell bad, otherwise I wouldn't have been told to leave the kitchen. Also, the non-Islamic people also light up scents in their homes which are already weird-smelling by itself so that smell mixes with the smell of the spices and then you get a terrible smell. BTW, I don't like biryani either.
