cause when they're in court they transcend their personhood and represent something above themselves, they're supposed to be a manifestation/ human embodiment of the law and its cold, dispassionate, impersonal nature. Same reason monarchs wear uniforms or specific garb during ceremonies, cops and soldiers wear uniforms, politicians and world leaders wear suits etc. There's no room for expressions of individualism.

cause the judge represents something sacred and essential for civilization, like political leaders. It's about respecting the office not necessary the person. And the rituals and etiquette are there to highlight the specialness of the process and what the judge represents.

It takes decades of law practice along with maintaining high NT relationships with fellow colleagues and government officials to reach that post in the judiciary.

They are the ones who decide “what‘s right and what’s wrong” under the act of god. I believe addressing them with the respected title doesn’t hurt.
