They were adventurers. They picked up their swords and shields and went to a place that was unknown and hostile to them and conquered it (some of it). Who doesn't love adventurers?

I'd say life was much better for the average Europan man then than it is now. You get to marry at a young age and start fucking your sweet young wife and make babies with her before you're both 18. Most crusaders were religious fanatics that went there to really set up a Christian state, but if you were only interested in adventure and maybe getting rich it was a nice opportunity to exp that.
