Why do people, not just women do not appreciate nice people despite the harsh world we live in?

You would think that, in a harsh world such as ours, nice people would be gems to befriend and take great interest in and care for, as you're surely to get same energy back but No.

Have we really reached a point in society where narcissism is so high up in the sky, the everyone more than they like to admit secretly think they're manipulative and whenever someone does something nice to them is not because the person is nice it's because you've successfully manipulated them into doing so? Like seriously what is wrong with people? Someone care to explain?

People can be too nice and too courteous and that is annoying. Two common examples. People who wait and hold the door for you when you are far away (10+ yards). You are in no way helping me asshole, exactly the opposite, now you in my fucking way. Second one applies to driving, it is too difficult to explain without visual aids, suffice to say some people inconvenience a lot of people in an effort to be needlessly nice to one driver.

And being too nice is in many cases driven by selfish motivations.
