Why do people not think when they get mad?

Why do they think that being mad makes it ok to insult you and tell you horrible things in the heat of the moment?? Then they end up saying "sorry, I didn't mean it like that"

My narcy mom was mad at me because I criticized her the other day, and she started saying that me and my brother are nothing without her (crazy, isn't it?)

I told her I didn't ask for any of this, I didn't ask to be born in a fucked up marriage and always been told that I'm nothing on my own. She then replies, "I didn't ask for these children", "You are a psychopath, just like your father"
