I didn't get travel insurance in germany and was taken to a hospital against my will because I passed out on fentanyl long story but I got a 500$ bill, I just didn't pay it but I imagine if you travel to a third world country and get a severe medical emergency that requires surgery they might keep you hostage and make your family go bankrupt trying to save you
