Why do people waste their time shoveling their driveways?

We're having a huge snowstorm right now. I drove to the store earlier and everybody in the neighborhood is out shoveling their driveways. Why? Having a snow covered driveway in no way inhibits my ability to park my car in it. It doesn't stop me from walking either. Just drive/walk over the snow. It seems like such a useless chore.
