Why do short-term and long-term preferences in partners even exist?

Why can’t people just have one preference instead of classifying people into ONS vs LTR material? If we were immortal, do you think the concept of long-term preferences regarding a partner’s appearance and behavior would still exist, considering that there would be no need for high investment in children?

After people get into a long term relationship and actually experience everything a relationship has to offer in today's age, they tend to look for the small moments where the felt a sense of high. For example, when they had sex for the first time with their ltr bf/gf it was truly another sense of pleasure for them. Now instead of having to talk for like 100 hours or pay for 50 dates buying stuff for each other. They look for something they don't need to spend so much money on or have an emotional investment with.

So now you have people micro cheating for the sense of high whoring around.
