why do some people’s nose balloon when they smile?

why does some people’s nose width barely change when they smile, while others have their nose become twice as big?

some pics for reference. he kinda half smiles instead of a cheesy smile the girl does, but you get the idea.

This depends on the size of the nose. A person that already has a wide/flat nose will have their nose/nostrils double in size when they smile.

A person with a narrow/thin nose won't have a nose that gets any wider due to their nose bridge and nostrils already being small.

thats pretty obvious, but what determines this sort of ‘support’ for the nose tip?

some people get more definition around the nostrils when they smile, while others lose all the definition that there was. is it just skin thickness?

This is due to the alar base, skin thickness, nostrils size, and nasal muscles.

I think it’s the nose flaring as it’s being pulled as your smiling and wide noses are easier pulled

i think people with recessed maxillas have this more because their nose base just shows more than forward grown people

that and having a big nose in general
