Why do white Americans seem shorter than their down European counterparts?

Title. Now don't get me wrong there are a significant amount of young white Americans that a 6ft plus, but a whole majority of them that I noticed, were 5'8-5'10 on average. I'm in the airforce, and I'm stationed on a base that has cross pilot, and troop training with pilots from all over the world. I've seen British, Australian, German, French, Italian and even Serbian pilots and troops. And the one thing that I've noticed, is that on average, they are a few inches taller than white Americans.

As I am typing this, standing in line right now in front me is this dude, who is probably half a inch shorter than me. He's young, white, and blonde hair and blue eyes with an upturned small nose. Pure typical Germanic/nordic phenotype, yet 5 min ago I when I was at a subway, there were these two Italian Italian troops or pilots, (I couldn't really tell which one I just saw the flag), who were not only as tall as me but I'm pretty sure WERE taller than me. And no, they didn't look like they were some kind of of "northern" Italian or whatever so dont even start. They both looked stereotypical. One was a swarthy bald Italian and the other one was your typical Guido black swept back hair and roman nose. And they WEREN'T YOUNG, one looked like he was in his 30s the other one was well in his 40s going on 50.

As I put this together I thought to myself, wait wtf, I was under the impression that northern euros were taller than southern euros. Than I looked around the cafeteria and I saw all these typical looking Germanic or dark hair British looking whites who were all 5'8-5'10, and I'm thinking, wtf is this, how is this possible. So what's the big freken deal, why the fuck are we Americans on average a few inches shorter? It makes no sense.

Americans are on par with the average height in britain, people from germany or denmark or the netherlands are taller. Also, americans who join the military are usually from the lower class who is a bit below 5’10 on average

What if they are. There are plenty of whites in America who are 100% pure European. Surely a mix between a German and Irish person shouldnt result in a shorter than average offspring?

That did use to be the case but now that all classes can get enough nutrition it is almost entirely genetic. The genetic makeup of the lower class and the people living in rural areas is different

If I recall correctly the Dutch were actually kind of short on average a couple centuries ago until they upped their dairy consumption and now they're the tallest in Europe. In the Midwest we eat a lot of dairy growing up, and I think that's why whites here seem to be a lot taller.
