That being said not every metric unit is as familiar to everyone, for example mph & miles are easier to visualise for most people than their metric equivalents.

Metric tends to be powers of ten, it’s a lot easier to scale for this reason. A quantity can be classified by a power prefix, whereas KiloMiles just sounds stupid.
