Being quiet is usually a sign that you're intelligent/of high intellect. People of this calibre often prefer to be alone, Schopenhauer said something similar:

And as for why other people dislike it: Being quiet means you're unpredictable since people don't know how you're feeling and unpredictability freaks most people out.
This goes for most types of behaviour that deviate from how the larger crowd acts. If you step out of line, it unsettles people around you. But that's actually a good thing in most cases.

Usa is pretty extroverted country so it makes sense that they question your quietness.

I live in Finland, one of the most introverted countries one earth, so I can be quiet without being bothered.
