why does holding eye contact feel rude

It's rude if you hold it too long when outside of a conversation.

I used to stare everybody dead in the eyes when I was younger but eventually stopped doing that because I realized I looked like shit and don't like drawing attention to myself.
Now I avoid eye contact unless I have to talk to someone and hate being looked at. Try to keep to myself as much as possible. Kinda hard to do sometimes, if you're treated like a criminal and interrogated by security staff at the grocery store. Would become invisible if I could to not deal with people.
