Why does the United States have such odd population densities throughout its territory?

The majority of Americans reside in East Coast cities, mostly along the Atlantic Ocean. The rest of the US is empty, spare few cities in the Pacific Northwest. Many states like Wyoming, Montana, Nebraska, Utah and Idaho are largely unpopulated, miles and miles of empty land with no habitations

Its like that everywhere though. Everyone is living on the coast - look at Australia- virtually no habitation in the entire country except the coast

As for why wyoming , utah, etc. are all wasteland shitholes. I hate to be the bearer of bad news but its cuz no immigrant want to work there. Its filled with rednecks (and they are all uneducated) so theres no reason for big companies to settle their headquarters there either . Thats pretty much the main reason

If there was money or talent or some advantage to moving there- companies would do it.

Must be related to sea transportation access. South dokato to the closest ocean is 1500miles. It was pain in the ass to transport goods 1500miles back then. Also people from Europe come to the east coast first so it makes sense that population density is higher than west coast.

because most of the job opportunities are located in metropolitan areas

the western interior of north america is just arid and mountainous. its not as habitable as the eastern interior or the coasts. so it can only support a small population.
