I think dolphins and orcas have demonstrated suicide, generally you need some overpowering of your most important primal impulse - which is to survive - and it requires some level of sentience. Most of the time the cause of such an override is mental illness but there can be examples of ritualistic suicide like the Japanese which adhere to higher concepts like honor.

Black people and women commit suicide less because they have less agency over their primal impulses. If you don't have the ability to kill yourself at will you are an NPC really. Only once you control your own death do you control your own life.
