Why is cowardice frowned upon?

How come society looks down upon a coward? Cowardice is self-preservation’s most lethal weapon. It’s survival of the fittest. Do anything you can to survive. So why is being a coward seen as pathetic when it’s literally the greatest way for a man fo avoid death, pain, danger, and loss?
