Why is "ethnic" only used for niggers?

Title. Etnic is only used when referring to brown and black people, as if an ethos is only one when not white. Germans, french, english, italian etc are all ethnic groups (or overgroups maybe, as its not that simple, but you get the point.).
Why is ethnic synonymous with non white?

Idk I’m pretty confused on this too but I believe ethnic is someone that isnt white (so like Indian, Nigerian and like basically any other countries where the majority of ppl arent white)
