As a sentient being/ consumer I would rather see ugly people like myself doing the cool stuff and sporting the latest trends. Most people are ugly too. Why is it good marketing to use good looking people then?

It just does not work that way. You have a very incel way of thinking, normies never think like that. Attractive people catch our attention. Why the fuck you think thousands of YouTubers keep putting hot girls with tight yoga pants or very visible cleavages in their thumbnails? Because these videos get the biggest amount of clicks. It's human nature that we like seeing attractive faces and bodies and it also depends a lot on what type of commercials or ads you're talking about.

If you're talking about some high class luxurious brand like Gucci, Dolce & Gabbana, Versace, of course there are going to be high class looking models promoting this stuff. But if it's just some random family shopping in and ad for Ikea they'll look for average people.
