Why is nostalgia/rosy retrospection even a thing?

I often catch myself yearning for the "good ol' times and memories", despite me feeling this way for the last 10 years. Do we essentially just want to forget about present circumstances and enjoying the idea of not worrying about them

mm well. some people did have much better lives at earlier points in their youth. but i enjoy moving through the seasons.
