Back when I was a kid, it was the same thing in Romania - all kids were outside playing football, now it's pretty much impossible to do this - kids are less likely to be left unsupervised, the number of cars has increased significantly, all empty spaces in cities have been transformed into parking lots or had buildings build, everything is overcrowded now, there are simply no more free spaces where you can play a quick match with your buddies. So without the possibility of kids easily playing football, the interest in it has dropped and the level of professional Romanian football also.
