Tanned skin is a WEALTH indicator, beacuse the first europeans that had the money to leisure travel to southern countries and lay by the pool was the rich ones

Historically only affluent people had the money to travel on airplanes and go on vacations

It used to be that tanned skin was considered low class because laborers work outside in the sun, but post-WW2 and the golden era turned it upside down and people started travelling for leisure and coming back home tanned.

Being tanned was basically like holding a big sign that said "I'm richer than you, I can afford to travel to Spain"
