you can thank extreme bureaucracy and nimbyism for the current state of infrastructure in the uk

it is not uncommon for new infrastructure projects to be completely scrapped or downsized because a few people complained.

we literally had a new school for disabled kids planned near our area but it was rejected because some locals were “concerned about noise pollution and anti-social behaviour”????

this has happened with everything from schools, to hospitals, to high speed rail, etc

you could propose the most impressive and great infrastructure project but if even a single resident, mp, or local councillor objects to your design, the entire project ends up getting scrapped. it’s a shame and one of the reasons why britian hasn’t built any major infrastructure projects in decades

Nimbyism is a huge part of it 100%. So many promising projects scrapped like you said. HS2 was just a total waste of money and time.
