In certain parts of Ukraine there are heavy amounts of ethnically russian people who spoke Russian and are basically Russians living in the boarders of Ukraine. So there was democratic elections where they voted to join Russia. Ukraine then said naw fuck you we are suspending the election since we don't like the result. That pissed off the people in those regions and showed the illegitimacy of so called democratic process in Ukraine. Bc of that Putin said he needed to invade to take back these parts of Ukrain to save the Russian people in those regions

That's how it was explained to me from an actual Ukrainian girl with family in that country, I could be wrong

It would be like if Los Angeles voted to join Mexico and the vote passed, then the US said naw we don't recognize that vote and then Mexico invaded to protect the ethnic Mexicans or some BS. Not really but kinda. Not really bc theose mexicans have been pouring across on their own. But with the Russians in Ukraine some of that resulted after the USSR collapsed and new boarders were drawn and it just happened Russians were caught on the wrong side of the political boarder

Usa started this shit by saying they’d back Ukraine them let them get bullied. Not that Ukraine aren’t traitors to slavs, but they had no reason to be friends with Russia either.

Modern Ukraine and its borders are a result of a Soviet social project. Ukrainian SSR was allocated large amounts of land from Russia which included the Russian population residing on it. Some say this was to ensure political reliability of the Ukrainian SSR...others say it was to break down Russian nationalism within the USSR by splitting Russians up.

If anything can be considered "Ukraine" as a distinct state separate from Russia, it would be the north western portion of it and some pieces of Poland. "Ukrainian" as a language is basically a stepping stone between Russian and Polish, but barely 25% of the country used it as their primary language prior to 2022.

Russia was happy with the status quo post USSR as long as Ukraine remained Russia aligned, but after the 2013-2014 coup Ukraine's political tragectory has been towards EU/Nato alignment - basically homosexuality and infinity brown hordes. This is unacceptable to Russia, which has launched the invasion to:

- keep a hostile Ukraine from inviting Nato troops and missiles onto Russia's borders
- reincorporate the Russian population and historically Russian lands which were increasingly coming under pressure to drop their language and identity
- secure land bridge to Crimea, home of the Russian black sea fleet

Putin has an essay on the unity of Ukrainians and Russians which outlines his perspective on the matter fairly well.

The major reason is because Ukraine was historically in Russia's sphere of influence, and Putin doesn't want Ukraine to join the western sphere of influence by joining the EU and NATO. Russia views that as basically Ukraine being annexed by the USA. Russia is obsessed with Ukraine because Russian civilization began in Kyiv. Also Ukraine is a divided country. The pro-western view is held by people with a West Ukrainian nationalist identity who speak Ukrainian. Many people in the east and south of Ukraine consider themselves ethnic Russians and want closer ties with Russia. That's why the civil war started in 2014.

Russia has been massacring subhumans in their frontier for a long time. It's part of the russianization process.
