Alot of people are saying that they look worse than they actually do in selfies and pictures with distortion
However there is more nuance to it. Obviously the lens distorts your image. But that does not automatically mean you look worse!
Lets take somebody with a long face, high esr, high pfl, wide mouth and nose.
He is going to look much worse with lens distortion since with distortion the outer more backwards parts of the face become smaller and the middle of the face bigger meaning longer face (zygos are out and backwards, while chin and midfaceare "infront" and in the middle), higher esr (zygos are out and back, interpupilarry is middle and infront)... . So the flaws become worse in distorted pics.
for example lets look at K Shami:
his main flaw is the length of his face
distorted:
vs undistorted:
while of course other things are different between the pictures, clearly the distortion makes him look worse
Now lets look at somebody with the "opposite face", so wide face, low esr, low pfl...
He is going to look much better with distortion because all of his measurements become better: less wide face (zygos are out and behind, midface length in the front and middle), esr becomes wider ( zygos are out and behind, interpupilarry middle and front)... .
for example lets look at Jordan Barret
his main flaw is his his high facial width
undistorted:
vs distorted:
clearly the distortion makes him look better
And now we know the statistics indicate equal deviation from the ideal to both ends (also as what we percieve as ideal seems to be average for most measurements). So the average measurement is the ideal one.
And this means on average distortion (in normal amounts) neither benefits nor harms looks (since most images, where ones looks are in consideration have non extreme amounts of distortion)
