Why majority of music is degenerate and rots your brain

Content analyses (e.g., Herd 2008; Weitzer & Kubrin 2009) show rap lyrics have dramatically increased drug-glorification (6x since 1979), which experimental work links to real attitude/behavior shifts, longitudinal data tie heavy exposure to delinquency and lower self-control

These effects compound with heavy/repeated listening, especially in impressionable teens, rap isn’t unique (heavy metal or certain pop can do similar), but its cultural dominance and explicit promotion of anti-social “bad ideas” (thug life over discipline, dominance over mutual respect, instant gratification over long-term achievement) make the documented impacts particularly relevant, listeners absorb the worldview: aggression becomes realness, drugs become success markers, often at the expense of personal responsibility, healthy relationships, or constructive identity

TL;DR:
Survey of 1,056 U.S. young adults (15-25); frequent rap listening strongly predicted higher alcohol frequency, problematic drinking (AUDIT scores), marijuana use, club-drug use, and aggressive acts (fights, threats, weapon use) even after controlling for age, gender, race, sensation-seeking, and other genres (β coefficients 0.069–0.178, all p < .05 or better)
TL;DR:
12-month longitudinal study of Black girls (14-18); higher baseline rap-video exposure predicted increased aggressive behaviors and multiple negative health outcomes (e.g., risky sex, STD acquisition risk) at follow-up
TL;DR:
Experiment with 54 college men; those who heard misogynous rap (vs. neutral) were far more likely to select sexually violent/assaultive film vignettes to show a female confederate (37% vs. 7%)
TL;DR:
Five experiments (>500 college students); violent lyrics (including rap examples like Cypress Hill) increased aggressive word-associations, hostile thoughts, and self-reported hostility, even humorous violent tracks did so. Effects held after controls
TL;DR:
Black teens exposed to violent rap videos (vs. non-violent or none) showed greater acceptance of violence, higher intent to commit violent acts or sell drugs, and lower academic aspirations
TL;DR:
College students exposed to high-sexual-content hip-hop videos showed increased objectification of women and acceptance of rape myths vs. low-content controls
TL;Dr:
College students listening to rap (including misogynistic tracks) reported significantly higher sexism scores afterward, especially males—even non-explicit rap raised levels
TL;DR:
Men listening to misogynistic/sexual-aggressive rap/lyrics administered more “aggression” (spicier hot sauce) to female targets and showed increased vengeance thoughts toward women
TL;DR:
Multiple surveys linked rap/hip-hop preference or listening to higher smoking, marijuana use, and other substance initiation among youth/teens (stronger than pop music)
TL;DR:
Across experiments, violent/misogynistic lyrics (common in rap) consistently raised hostile cognitions, negative affect, and (when triggers present) aggressive behavior; effects on physiology mixed but cognition/emotion robust

My next thread will be on classical music, and how it is superior.

I took a step back from degen music for a long time and listening to it now genuinely makes me uncomfortable at times cause of the repetition of the same themes.

Shostakovich Symphony No. 5 (4th movement is the best), Shostakovich Symphony No. 10, Sibelius Symphony No. 2, Mahler Symphony No. 1 (4th Movement), Mahler Symphony No. 2 (4th movement), Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 5, Richard Strauss Don Juan, Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 2, Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto, Sibelius Violin Concerto, Brahms Violin Concerto, Korngold Violin Concerto, Chopin Ballade No. 1, Stravinsky Firebird Suite.

For Shostakovich Symphony No. 5, it's very important you listen to the Bernstein/NY Phil recording as other orchestras take the tempo much slower. Here's a link:

This is in order of what I like.

Oh shit what do you play? Yeah Firebird is my favorite too. 1919 vertion is the most listenable altogether but 1910 and 1911 have the best parts imo. I love some of orchestral work and sections of his other ballets but since its ballets its really made for casual listening by any means. He is also the king of complex rythms and I listen to quite a lot of math rock so maybe thats why its appealing. I like your taste btw. While I don't recognize all the pieces I do really like Shostakovich and Rachmaninoff. I haven't listened to Rachmaninoff as much as Shostakovich, but a friend of mine keeps telling me to. Bach is also great, I listen to him a lot when studying

i play the violin jfl and yeah we performed 1919 (as does everyone ngl) but i fw 1910 and 1911 a lot. tbh i dont listen to 1910,11, or 45 that often tho. its hard to find good recordings for

thanks G, I also don't listen to Rachmaninoff that much either but i accompanied his second piano concerto (and all my friends like it), so i've been converted so to speak:lul:

What kind of bach do u listen to? Solo instrumental music or keyboard works?

Keyboard mostly, but both. Yeah I know almost everyone plays the 1919 vertion these days. I also want to play the violin:love: I considered getting one. Kinda sucks to find classes and such when you are 19 though. I wanted to play piano for ages but my mom said we didn't have enough space:feelswah: Could have started playing something else back then but didn't want to for some reason. I also felt like keyboard was hella lame compared to a piano jfl

I also felt like keyboard was hella lame compared to a piano jfl
haha yeah, learning the violin at 19 probably will take up too much of ur time and its very difficult to pick up, especially when improvements arent as fast and linear as expected. i started when i was like 8 jfl:ROFLMAO:

piano is cool tho i also wish i played

Yeaaa ik. I've heard it sounds awful for the first 1-2 years. I'll see what I'll do. Maybe I'll get a keyboard after all

Stravinsky is great but some of his compositions are kinda nuts jfl. I love Firebird tho, I actually had the chance to play it last year.

Do not listen to this man, he named two Jews, Gustav Mahler, and Erich Wolfgang Korngold

i see why u prefer wagner. Mahler converted to catholicism tho, was only born Jewish. tbh i do like Bruckner's Symphonies although I do think they can be boring at times.

i also notice you prefer more lighthearted music, whereas i prefer more emotional pieces. also sprach is great tho.
yes i am, i was responding to OP's reply where he mentioned how he was 19.

Agreed, but I usually listen to him while doing something so it isn't my main focus
