Why majority of music is degenerate and rots your brain
Content analyses (e.g., Herd 2008; Weitzer & Kubrin 2009) show rap lyrics have dramatically increased drug-glorification (6x since 1979), which experimental work links to real attitude/behavior shifts, longitudinal data tie heavy exposure to delinquency and lower self-control
These effects compound with heavy/repeated listening, especially in impressionable teens, rap isn’t unique (heavy metal or certain pop can do similar), but its cultural dominance and explicit promotion of anti-social “bad ideas” (thug life over discipline, dominance over mutual respect, instant gratification over long-term achievement) make the documented impacts particularly relevant, listeners absorb the worldview: aggression becomes realness, drugs become success markers, often at the expense of personal responsibility, healthy relationships, or constructive identity
TL;DR
PAY ATTENTION TO WHAT YOURE LISTENING TO!! IT INFLUENCES YOU!!

TL;DR:
Survey of 1,056 U.S. young adults (15-25); frequent rap listening strongly predicted higher alcohol frequency, problematic drinking (AUDIT scores), marijuana use, club-drug use, and aggressive acts (fights, threats, weapon use) even after controlling for age, gender, race, sensation-seeking, and other genres (β coefficients 0.069–0.178, all p < .05 or better)

Experiment with 54 college men; those who heard misogynous rap (vs. neutral) were far more likely to select sexually violent/assaultive film vignettes to show a female confederate (37% vs. 7%)

Men listening to misogynistic/sexual-aggressive rap/lyrics administered more “aggression” (spicier hot sauce) to female targets and showed increased vengeance thoughts toward women

TL;DR:
Across experiments, violent/misogynistic lyrics (common in rap) consistently raised hostile cognitions, negative affect, and (when triggers present) aggressive behavior; effects on physiology mixed but cognition/emotion robust
My next thread will be on classical music, and how it is superior.

ERIC - EJ509391 - The Influence of Misogynous Rap Music on Sexual Aggression against Women., Psychology of Women Quarterly, 1995
Results from 54 college men who heard misogynous or neutral rap music and then selected neutral, sexual-violent, or assaultive film vignettes to show a female companion suggest that misogynous music facilitates sexually aggressive behavior and support a relationship between cognitive distortions...

Literal lyrics? The effects of sex, violence and misogyny in popular music
It's a conversation that has been going on for years as the lyrics heard in popular genres of music have become measurably more violent and sexual. But does this increase in explicit lyrics have an effect on its listeners?

Violent and prosocial music: Evidence for the impact of lyrics and musical tone on aggressive thoughts, feelings, and behaviors - PubMed
Although there is a large research base on the psychological impacts of violent and prosocial visual media, there is little research addressing the impacts of violent and prosocial music, and which facets of the music have the greatest impact. Four experiments tested the impact of lyrics and/or...
