Sadness or emotional stress activates the sympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for the "fight or flight" response. This releases hormones such as adrenaline and CRF, which slow down digestive processes so that the body's energy can be directed toward dealing with the perceived threat.

Hormonal Changes: Sadness and depression affect the balance of several hormones:
CRF and cortisol suppress appetite, acting on brain centers that regulate hunger and satiety [2, 3].
Levels of serotonin and dopamine (neurotransmitters linked to mood and pleasure) are also frequently altered, which can decrease interest in and pleasure from food [1, 2].

Impact on the Digestive System: The digestive system has its own nervous system (the enteric nervous system), which is highly sensitive to emotional state. Stress and sadness can cause nausea, stomach aches, and abdominal discomfort, making eating less appealing or even aversive [2].

Mental Focus and Loss of Interest: When a person is immersed in sadness, their mind is focused on emotional pain. Food and eating, which normally provide pleasure, lose priority and interest
