They claim it is simply because they feel they are the other gender. In reality, it is the most elaborate form of self-sabotage.
For example, in the case of a FTM; the real reason she transitions is because she is constantly rejected by men because she is ugly. She wishes she could be a hot girl, but she knows she never could be. She feels like a "failed" woman. She comes to believe that by continuing to attempt to exist and appear as a woman, she is constantly eliciting reactions from men which she knows in advance will most likely be rejections. Even if in reality, she does not even cross the mind of most men. As a defense mechanism, she deliberately diminishes her feminine characteristics and claims she does not care what said men think, as a means of rejecting herself before they can reject her, as if she is saying "I don't care what you think--look, I'm diminishing what feminine qualities of myself to get rid of any chance you might like me. See how much I don't care? I don't care at all. I really don't care." Of course, unconsciously, it is the only thing she cares about and will pump all kinds of chemicals into her body and undergo all sorts of surgeries to "show" it to them.
As a FTM, she then generally seek to date women, and their desired partners usually represent the kind of women they wish they could have been while they were still a woman. So for her, sexuality represents less an endeavor to be with someone else but to be someone else entirely.
