You may have seen these Orthodontic Bands somewhere
Now there are multiple ways to apply these Bands, for Overbites they are classified as CLASS II Elastics
They hook from the upper canine down and back to a lower molar
The Concept behind it is pretty simple:
With the constant use of force the bands force the teeth to retract inwards/ project outwards, taking the gum with it and vice versa
With time this is supposed to align the teeth perfectly to create a healthy bite
-
Now thinking logically you may think, since its pushing the gum inward wouldnt it theoretically push my philtral area/ subnasale further in, making my convexities flatter?
The answer is yes, but not in the way youd like
See what actually happens by pulling the area inward you are actually reducing the support of the maxilla onto your bones
This would cause your philtrum to appear longer as it doesnt protrude outwards as much as it used to
will make your nasolabial angle higher
give you more prominent nasolabial folds, again due to the lack of support
-
Now at least your profile has gotten flatter, right?
Hate to break it to you but it has actually gotten worse
Your bite may have gotten corrected, but it had to be compensated by taking away your aesthetics
See what you have focused on is only the upper teeth area
However the Lower teeth have also shifted, more forward: DECREASING THE DISTANCE BETWEEN YOUR LOWER TEETH AND THE CHIN
By this meaning that your Chin has stopped protruding more outward as it used to, making your Convexities LOWER than they were
" Well it could have harmonized with the upper teeth as well, as they both have shifted at the same rate "
Do this now: Try to push your lower Jaw forward just enough for you to have a correct bite
Now what do you think would have happened if your upper teeth suddenly would have moved more inward
Your bite wouldnt stay the same, either it would become an edge to edge/ underbite or what actually happens is
YOUR JAW BEING FORCED TO MOVE BACKWARD TO BE ABLE TO KEEP UP WITH YOUR BITE
Combined with the Retrusion of the Chin actually having a negative effect on your Profile
-
All in all, it depends where you stand/ what your values truly are
